The legendary history of abu is wrapped up resembling that it has derived its name from Mount arbud, when the youngest son of himalaya, along with the assistance of a snake called arbud flooded the gorge in the area with water to save shiva’s revered bull.In the holy puranas,it has been referred as Arbudaramya (forest of arbud”) and Abu is derived from the ancient name .It is also believed that the sage Vasishta retired to southern spur at Mount abu following his differences with sage vishvamitra.
